Neal goes on to State
20 February 2008 — The Rosewood wrestling team will be represented in the statewide individual championships in Winston-Salem this weekend after three Eagles qualified in last weekend’s regional competition.
Senior Olivia Neal’s qualification makes state history, as she is the first female on record to qualify for a state championship. Her third place finish this past weekend earned her the honor.
Coach Bill Edmundson said Neal had worked hard this year to reach several goals, and he was proud of her progress.
“Olivia has worked really hard this year to improve her strength, conditioning, and technique,” he said. “She is a very goal-oriented person and set some pretty lofty goals for the season. She has just a couple of items left to check off.”
Neal went into competition as the top seed in the 103 division, and showed herself worthy of the distinction with a twelve-second pin in the first round against North Pitt. She also had a 3:02 pin against Croatan.
Neal’s only loss came in a close match against JC Mitchell of First Flight, in which she fell 8-6.
“Olivia wrestled great against JC,” said Coach Edmundson, “but they have two totally different styles and he refused to tie up with her or wrestle on the mat.”
Olivia followed with a 43-second pin in the consolation round to qualify for states, and earned third place with another win against Croatan, this time defeating her opponent 11-8.
Rosewood’s Josh Holmes also earned a third-place finish this weekend in the 145 division. Holmes had two pins in the first two rounds, and earned his only loss of the tournament in a 9-6 nail-biter against Croatan.
Holmes bounced back in the semi-finals with a defensive pin against Edenton Holmes, and earned a pin after 4:11 against Pasquotank in the final round.
Coach Edmundson commented that Holmes wrestled well all weekend.
Trevor Morris was the third of the Eagles to qualify for the state tournament, earning second place in the heavyweight division. However, an injury that may have kept Trevor out of the top spot will likely keep him home from the championships this weekend.
Trevor had a big performance, fighting his way out of the number 5 seed with wins against Trask, Topsail, and Northside.
In the final round of the tournament, Morris threw his opponent, injuring his knee. Rosewood had to injury default on the match, conceding first place.
Coach Edmundson said Morris has an MRI scheduled, but is doubtful that he will be able to wrestle by Friday.
Overall, Coach Edmundson said he was very pleased with his team’s performance.
“These three wrestlers earned their passage to the State Championships and have proven that they are among the best wrestlers in the State at their respective weight classes,” he said.
