Neal makes State wrestling history
27 February 2008 — After making state history as the first female qualifier for the NCHSAA State Wrestling Championships, Olivia Neal had a seventh place finish at last weekend’s championship tournament.

Neal started off her tournament run with a pin against last year’s state silver medalist in the 103 division, Ray Farnsworth of Bandys High School. She pinned her opponent in 1:55, putting her through to the second round.
In the second round of championship matches, Neal suffered a technical fall to Eric Messick of Robbinsville, bumping her into the consolation bracket. There, she had her second win of the weekend, defeating Robbie Gladwell of Croatan for the third time in one week with an 8-4 decision.
Neal’s tournament run ended in the third round with a 12-9 loss to Cody Decamp of South Davidson.
Coach Bill Edmundson said a slow start and lack of time contributed to Neal’s final loss.
“She began wearing Cody down in the third period and got the score within three points,” he said. “She was turning him to his back as time expired. If we only had 30 more seconds, she would have pinned him and stood on the winner’s podium.”
However, he added that he feels Neal is a winner simply by making it to the competition.
“She made some believers this weekend and opened up opportunities for other female athletes,” he said. “Olivia was a great ambassador for Wayne County and Rosewood High School.”

Rosewood had two other state qualifiers for the tournament, but only one wrestled this weekend. Heavyweight Trevor Morris sat out the tournament due to an MCL tear.
Josh Holmes represented Rosewood at 145, wrestling two strong matches but finishing 0-2 for the tournament.

He started off wrestling Zach Whitman of Rosman, who pinned Holmes after a 4:52 struggle. Holmes then fell to Aaron Lamb of Northwood by major decision 21-10 in the consolation round.
Coach Edmundson praised Holmes’ efforts all season.
“The best part is he is a junior and will be right back up here next year,” he said. “Joshua quietly went through the season taking care of business and we’re all proud of his season.”
