Town takes over Community Building rental

5 March 2008 — The Princeton Town Board will help with the operation of the community building as the Lions Club tries to finance some needed repairs.

Dr. Joey Barber, who serves on the Lions’ committee that oversees the operation and who has taken on many of the responsibilities, came before the town board at their regular monthly meeting Monday night.

Dr. Barber stated that for many years Jake Woodard oversaw the rental of the building, but when Mr. Woodard retired and many of the Lions were working out of town, the committee agreed to hire Renee Rhodes to oversee the rentals. She is paid 20% of the rental fee in exchange for keeping up with the schedule and showing the building to potential renters.

The proceeds from the rentals in recent years have been sufficient to cover routine maintenance, but Dr. Barber said they did not have any money to do more than that. Particularly at this time, the floors need to be replaced.

Commissioner Walter Martin spoke about how much the community building meant to so many in the town, and groups, including the scouts, regularly used the building. He asked that the town staff take on the responsibilities which Mrs. Rhodes had performed for the Lions, and that any fee the town would receive be waived for three years to help with the financing of the repairs. Dr. Barber had proposed a 5% or 10% fee to the town.

Dr. Barber said they were working with BB&T to finance new floors for the building, though that had not been finalized. They hoped to use savings on the operating expenses to help finance the new floor.

Town Administrator Marla Ashworth suggested that the town could also waive the water and sewer charges for the building during this period, as they do for the fire and rescue building.

Commissioner Brandon Holland voiced concern, saying how all he heard was the town staff was over-worked. He did not feel they could afford to take on the extra effort.

Town Clerk Kay Earp responded that they already field many calls from individuals wanting to rent the building, and explain the fees, etc. She did not see the rentals as a great burden, but thanked Mr. Holland for his concern.

Mrs. Ashworth said the bookkeeping involved would be minimal as well, and she felt the town staff should support this major contributor to the facilities available to citizens.

The board unanimously agreed to taking on the duties and to waive the fee and water and sewer charges for three years.
