Princeton senior killed in tragic accident

12 March 2008 — One of the best and the brightest lights at Princeton School was tragically extinguished Sunday evening.

Bell

Mamie Katlyn Bell, 18, a senior honor student, died in a traffic accident near her Brogden Road home just before 6 p.m.

She was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Afterwards, her body was taken to Johnston Memorial Hospital, where her mother, Kay Bell, was on duty as a nurse.

Miss Bell was apparently driving down Old Sanders Road and turned left onto Old Brogden Road, pulling out in front of a 2000 Ford Explorer driven by Martin Herrera of Smithfield. The 2001 Toyota Celica she was driving was hit on the driver’s door.

Mr. Herrera was charged with driving without a license, but will not face charges related to the accident itself.

Sunday evening, flowers were placed at the intersection, which is across from Sanders Chapel United Methodist Church. The scene is about two miles from her home.

Her boyfriend, Riley Boyette of Kenly, a ’07 PHS grad, was riding with her at the time, and he suffered minor injuries. The two were planning to attend next week’s Senior Prom.

In addition to being an honor student, she was president of the Beta Club, co-president of the Art Club, a member of the yearbook staff, a founding member of the Cuisine Club at the school, a member of the golf team, a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a member of Future Business Leaders of America, a member of the PEP Club, and a member of the student council. She served as a Commencement Marshal last year and was a cheerleader in 9th grade.

Katlyn was a member of Tee’s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church and was active in the youth group at the church.

She had applied to and been accepted to attend Meredith College in the fall, and had recently been notified of a scholarship. She planned to major in interior design.

Students and faculty members gathered at Johnston Memorial Sunday night. Grief counselors were at the school Monday, but a number of students did not attend school.
