Princeton Elementary principal announced
Kim Wellons, principal at Four Oaks, was named the new principal of Princeton Elementary yesterday (Tuesday, March 11).
Barden crossing to close
The railroad crossing at Barden Street in Princeton will be temporarily closed from April 7, 2008 through May 7, 2008 to observe and evaluate traffic patterns.
Little Relay Stars
Baby Photo Contest
The first annual Little Relay Stars Baby Photo Contest is an American Cancer Society/Johnston County Relay for Life fundraiser, and is now in progress. Babies of not more than 24 months of age by May 31, 2008, may be entered. One 8x10 photo and two wallet-sized photos, along with a $25 fee, are needed for the application. To apply or for more information, please contact Helen Stanley at 963-1142 or Brenda Lee at 963-2054. Deadline for applicants is March 31. All applicants' pictures will be on display at Johnston Medical & Surgical Supply in the Medical Mall on Brightleaf Blvd., then published in local papers in early April. Winners will be announced and awards given at the Relay during the closing ceremony on May 31. All proceeds, including the application fee, will go to the Johnston County Relay.
Beginner's genealogy class
A six-session course entitled “A Beginner’s Look at Genealogy” will be offered at the Johnston County Heritage Center in downtown Smithfield beginning Thursday night, March 27 and continuing weekly through May 1. The course will be offered through the Continuing Education Division of Johnston Community College. The sessions will last from 7 to 9 p.m. each Thursday in the Heritage Center’s third-floor reading room. Michael Watts of the Heritage Center staff will lead the sessions. Cost of the course is $30, and pre-registration is required through JCC. For more information, call the college at 209-2168 or 209-2552.
Girl Scout cookies on sale
Princeton Girl Scout Troop 1484 is selling Girl Scout Cookies now through March 16. They will be at Selma Food Lion on March 1, and at Wal-Mart in Smithfield on March 14 and 15. Thank you to the many customers who have already purchased cookies. Customers can also contact Troop Leader Leigh-Ann Pearce to order cookies.
Bulldog Reverse Drawing
The 15th Annual Bulldog Reverse Drawing ticket sales have begun. The drawing will be held at the Princeton School Cafeteria on Sat., April 12 at 6 p.m.
Tickets are $50 each, with a final prize of $5,000 cash. You can purchase tickets from any booster club member or Athletic Director Al Musgrave. Proceeds to benefit Princeton Athletics.
Mental Health needs assessment
The Johnston County Mental Health Center invites consumers and family members to participate in a needs assessment for Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Abuse services in Johnston County. A Consumer and Family Forum will be held on Monday, March 17th, at 6 pm at the Johnston County Mental Health Center. Input, comments, and suggestions are wanted to identify needs and gaps in services. Light refreshments will be served. For more information, please contact Alice O’Neal at 919-989-5500.
Storage items recovered
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office is looking for assistance with locating the owner of stolen property from a storage bin or storage facility. The Sheriff’s Office has seized a large amount of property that has possibly been taken from a storage unit in Wayne County. The property includes NASCAR items, authentic sport items and other toy like items. If you have had a break-in to a storage unit that has not been reported, please call Detective David Rose at 919-731-1541 and give him a detailed list of your stolen property.
