Sloppy parking may cost you $125
12 March 2008 — A former town commissioner gave the board an earful last Monday night. The town’s police chief vowed his rant wouldn’t be in vain, that some delinquent parkers would pay the next day.
Former commissioner Chris Watson had complained that students and parents are not respecting the street in front of his home on Bartholomew Drive again as baseball season is beginning.
He was asked if he had called the police to complain, but he responded he shouldn’t have to.
Mr. Watson had complained in the fall that there were times that he could not get into his drive those attending football games would block the drive, and there were people parking at times in his yard.
The police department put up signs on the street with school parking on the school side of the street, and during basketball season, there had not been problems, and students had not used his side of the street during the school day. Mr. Watson complained that he had pictures of abuse over that first weekend of baseball season.
Police Chief Eddie Lewis said that the recent Bojangles robbery had taken him away from the area much of the day, and apologized for not driving past on that Monday. “If someone is there tomorrow, they will get a $125 ticket. I can promise you from this day forward it will be enforced.
The board changed a proposed amendment to allow the sale of town surplus property on the internet to require their vote to approve disposal of any town property. The board had previously empowered the town administrator to make that determination, but after Commissioner Brandon Holland said that other nearby town boards routinely approve designation of surplus property, and he felt this town board aught to as well.
Commissioner David Starling made the motion to amend the ordinance to provide the town board’s approval before property could be declared surplus.
