New doctor at Horizon in Princeton

12 March 2008 — Johnston Memorial Hospital has added a family-care doctor to the medical staff.

Dr. Kira L. Vurlicer, 33, of Selma started seeing patients in January at Horizon Family Medicine in Princeton. Previously, she worked for three years at Western Wayne Medical Center, a family medicine clinic in Goldsboro.

Johnston Memorial recruited and hired Vurlicer to help fill a void of primary care doctors in the county. She is able to practice at Horizon because of a lease agreement between the hospital and the private practice.

Vurlicer, a native of Texas, said she and her fiancé moved to North Carolina three years ago because they wanted to live near the coast. He is a doctor, too, and works at an urgent care center in Garner.

“I like the support of the hospital,” she says. “And I like the Smithfield-Selma area. It’s got everything you need, from banks to shopping centers to oil change shops.”

Vurlicer earned her medical degree in 2000 from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. She completed her residency in 2003 at Corpus Christi Family Practice in Corpus Christi.

Vurlicer is board-certified in family medicine. In addition to primary care, she has worked in emergency departments at small Texas hospitals and in urgent care centers.
