Lewis's 10 driving rules

19 March 2008 — Princeton Police Chief Eddie Lewis is asking that in view of recent fatal accidents, that local drivers commit to safer and defensive driving habits. His Top Ten List:

1. I must recognize that driving is the most dangerous task that I do on a daily basis.

2. I must ensure that I devote my undivided attention to my driving.

3. I must expect the unexpected and be prepared to act correctly to avoid hazards.

4. I must always be courteous and cooperative with other drivers that share the highway.

5. I must obey the traffic laws that are in place even though other drivers may not.

6. I must be ever mindful that the people that I love and that love me expect no harm to come to me while I am driving.

7. I must manage my time so that I have ample time to reach my driving destination without compromising safety.

8. I must not allow anything to distract me or control my concentration while driving.

9. I must maintain a safe, three second following distance from the vehicle ahead of me.

10. I must be a responsible, safe, and defensive driver at all times.

He reminds citizens that 46,000 are killed on the highways annually. The majority of the deaths are due to some form of improper driving.
