Princeton man killed in accident

2 April 2008 — A Princeton man caused a car accident in Smithfield on Thursday night that left almost 2,000 homes without power.

According to Smithfield Police, Jeffrey Lee Massengill, 23, of W. Third Street, Princeton was driving at a high rate of speed on N.C. 210 near Cleveland School Road around 9:30 that night. Witnesses reported that he was driving erratically. He swerved in front of another car, which slammed on brakes; Massengill lost control and ran off the right side of the road, continuing down an embankment, where he struck a mailbox and a utility pole, breaking the pole in half. He was not wearing a seatbelt and was immediately ejected from the car, where he died. His passenger, Terry Martin II, 26, of Selma, was transported to Johnston Memorial with critical injuries, then airlifted to Duke Medical Center.

An open bottle of liquor was also found in the car, but Smithfield Police could not confirm if it was a contributing factor.
