Princeton Students Advance to State Speech Competition
by Susan Woodard
Johnston Soil and Water Conservation District
09 April 2008 — Two Johnston County students will advance to the State Soil and Water Conservation Public Speaking competition to present their speeches entitled, “We All Live in a Watershed.” This final competition will be held on May 2, in Raleigh. Both students, Brittany Godwin, 7th grader, and Katlyn Peedin, 8th grader, won first place in their grade categories in the regional Soil and Water Conservation Public Speaking Contest recently held in Wilson. They attend Princeton School.

Brittany Godwin couldn’t believe she won the regional Conservation Public Speaking Contest. Amid coughs and recovering from the flu, Brittany casually and proficiently presented her winning speech entitled, “We All Live in a Watershed.” Katlyn Peedin, a veteran winner from last year in the competition, was also excited about her accomplishment. The students presented speeches describing watersheds and the increasing need for watershed protection to ensure good water quality for a growing population. Both speeches also cited the need for water conservation due to the recent drought in North Carolina.
Each student won a $100 cash prize and a certificate. Elizabeth Logan, 8th grade science teacher at Princeton School, “We are so proud of these students and all of their hard work,” she said, beaming with pride.
“The students began their winning streak at the local level,” says Susan Woodard, Education Specialist with the Johnston Soil and Water Conservation District, who coordinates the local contest. “We are so fortunate to have such talented students and supporting teachers,” she added. ‘In addition to the Johnston students winning the regional speech contest, other Johnston County students did exceptionally well in the regional poster and essay contests which will be announced later,” she said.
