16 April 2008 – Johnston Community College is proud to announce the placement of students in the Cooperative Work Experience who are enrolled in the Early Childhood Education Program.
The Early Childhood Education Program is a two-year Associate Degree Program designed to prepare students to function effectively in working with early childhood age children. Through study and application, the student is exposed to such areas as child growth and development, physical and nutritional needs of children, care and guidance of children, and planning and writing developmentally appropriate activities to use with children.
According to Priscilla Prevette, director of the Early Childhood Program, the cooperative work experience gives the student opportunities to relate theory to practice by working directly with young children and their families and planning, implementing, and reflecting upon appropriate activities and experiences.
The students spend 10 hours per week caring for and guiding young children in their assigned work experience sites. There is a mentor/cooperating teacher in each room. They also attend a 2 hour lecture once a week and have scheduled conferences with their college supervisor as needed. This allows them time on campus to coordinate their planned units of study and discuss COE requirements in their respective classrooms. Priscilla Prevette and Diana Douglas are the college supervisors of the cooperative work experience students. The composition of the work experience sites is diverse consisting of private licensed centers, family/homes, church preschool and school-age care programs and extends to Wake and Wayne Counties as well as Johnston County. Harriet Barbour, director of the JCC Child Development Center, Tara Germanto, assistant director, and Kamika Williams and Amy Smith, preschool teachers, assist with the supervision and guidance of students placed in the JCC Child Development Center or who observe or visit the center.
Locally, Michelle Mitchell of Goldsboro was placed with Rosewood Elementary.
