Bulldogs face off against 3-A champ Falcons

16 April 2008 – It was one of those non-conference games that is usually long-forgotten a week or so later. Or maybe not.

Defending 1-A State Champion Princeton rallied against defending 3-A State Champion Charles B. Aycock Monday afternoon at the Princeton diamond for a lead in the sixth, and held on for a 5-4 win.Kameron

It marked an up and down week for the Bulldogs. Last Tuesday Princeton lost an early lead to fall to conference and county rival North Johnston, 8-5. Friday, they held on in a marathon 15-14 win at home over Ayden-Grifton.

After the three games, Princeton sits at 2-1 in league play, tied with Rosewood for second place, a game back of North Johnston. They are 7-7 in all games.

There was no lack of drama in Monday’s game, and the youth on both sides showed. In the bottom of the sixth, with the score tied at three apiece, Aycock’s pitcher gave up two singles to Michael Radford and Ryan Daughtry, but Radford was cut down at third, trying to take the extra base. Benton Myers then drew a walk, and Dillon Daughtry reached on an error to load the bases.

Christopher Hinton drew a walk to bring one run in, and Kameron Harrison singled to bring home Myers for a 5-3 advantage.

In the bottom of the inning, Radford was on the mound, coming on in the fifth to shut out CBA in fifth and sixth, but in the top of the seventh, he walked two.

Princeton Coach Bruce Proctor brought Dillon Daughtry to the mound, and he gave up a hit to make it 5-4, and then they issued a free pass to the Aycock catcher to load the bases. The new pitcher came through against the next two batters, though, getting a weak fly to the pitcher and striking out the final Falcon batter.

The Falcon starter limited Princeton to just five hits, but the Dawgs got two of those in the sixth to push what would be the winning runs across. They strung the other three together in the third.

After the first two Bulldog batters were retired in the third, Adam Peedin was hit by a pitch, and then Pat Jacobs lined an 0-2 pitch for a double to right. Radford brought both of them home with a double to left-center. Ryan Daughtry followed with a single to right to bring Radford home with the third run.

Kameron Harrison started the game for Princeton. He gave up a run in the second and two in the third. One of the runs was unearned. He allowed just five hits in four innings. He struck out three, but walked three as well.

Radford allowed three hits, struck out two, and gave up three walks.

Hinton has probably been Princeton strongest starter this season, and he started at North Johnston last Tuesday. The Bulldog offense was strong early and posted a 4-1 lead, but the Panthers scored four times in the bottom of the third to take a 5-4 lead.

The Bulldogs came back to tie it in the fifth, but in the bottom of the inning, after getting two outs, Hinton allowed some extra base hits and the Panthers took the lead for good, 8-5.

Jacobs, Radford and Ryan Daughtry each had two hits in the nine hit Princeton attack.

Radford worked the final 1 1/3 in relief.

In a battle that saw base runners get leg weary and a night when fielders had their challenges, Princeton and Ayden-Grifton combined Friday for 29 runs, 27 hits and ten errors.

Radford, who had pitched well in relief Tuesday, got the start Friday and was hurt by the Princeton defensive woes. Six of the nine runs he allowed in 3 1/3 innings were unearned. He allowed six hits and three walks while striking out five.

Dillon Daughtry came on in the fourth, allowing just five hits in four innings, striking out three in 3 2/3 innings plus. He benefited from the late Princeton surge as the Dawgs pushed across three runs in the bottom of the fifth, and added five more in the sixth, three on a homer off Dillon’s bat.

After Dillon allowed one run in the top of the seventh to make it 15-13, Coach Proctor brought in Hinton. The Chargers got two more hits and a walk to get within one run, but Hinton got three strikeouts to end the game.

Ryan Daughtry led the Princeton attack with three hits and five rbi including a three-run homer. Benton Myers added two hits and two rbi.

Princeton was back on the road to take on arch-rival Rosewood Tuesday in a battle for second. Friday they travel to Spring Creek. Next Tuesday North Duplin is at Princeton. All three are conference games.
