Lady 'Dawgs beat N. Johnston in twelve innings

16 April 2008 –

NL Staff Writer
Princeton’s softball team remains undefeated in the conference after an epic game against North Johnston Tuesday night and a big win over Ayden-Grifton on Wednesday.PHS softball

Tuesday’s match between last year’s co-champions for the Carolina Conference was a tight one to say the least, going 12 innings before Princeton finished with a one-point victory.

The teams were locked in battle for 11 of those innings without ever scoring a run. Princeton didn’t even get a hit until the seventh inning, and had several runners stranded on base before the final inning.

At the top of the twelfth inning, Hannah Wood got on base with a double up the middle. After Rebecca Harlan hit a fly to the pitcher for the first out, Tylan George sacrificed with a fielder’s choice to move Wood to third.

Ashley Braswell took the plate for the fourth time that game, and knocked a single up the middle, scoring Wood.

The Lady Dawgs made swift defensive work in the bottom half of the inning, with three outs on three batters, and secured the win 1-0.
April Keene was the starting pitcher for Princeton, going nine innings. She struck out nine and only had two hits. Traci Bridgers relieved Keene, throwing for the final three. She had three strikeouts, walked one, and had one hit.

After returning home at 11 the previous night, the ladies took the field again on Wednesday against Ayden-Grifton.

The Lady Dawgs started off a bit sluggish, and Ayden-Grifton scored the first run of the game in the second inning. The Princeton girls had several runners make it on base, but didn’t score a run until the fourth.

Things turned around in the fifth inning for the Bulldogs, however.
At the top of the fifth, catcher George stopped an Ayden-Grifton runner from stealing home, preventing a second run for Ayden-Grifton and sending the Dawgs to bat.

Devon Murphy led off with a walk, and advanced on a single from Sarah Eonta. A shallow hit to right center from Maegan Myers scored Murphy, while Eonta was thrown out at second.

A bunt from Brittany Baker put runners on first and second, and a single from Hannah Wood loaded the bases.

Danielle Mitchell knocked a triple to right center, scoring all three of her teammates on base. But Coach Terry Braswell signaled Mitchell home, and she was tagged out.

Before the inning was over, a double from Keene sent two more runners home to bring the Princeton score to 7.

The girls scored one more run in the sixth, and held Ayden-Grifton at one for the win.

Keene pitched for the first five innings, striking out four, walking one, and allowing one hit. Bridgers relieved, with one strikeout and one hit in two innings.

Nine of the Bulldogs combined for 11 total hits. Baker had two bunt singles, and Mitchell had a single and a triple. Braswell, Eonta, Myers, Harlan, Wood and George all had singles, and Keene contributed a double.

The Lady Bulldogs topped the hosting Lady Panthers of North Johnston High School 1-0 in extra innings in 1A Carolina Conference varsity softball Tuesday.

Ashley Braswell plated teammate Hannah Wood with a single in the top of the 12th inning.

The Lady Bulldog defense kept the Panthers from scratching back.

Braswell went two for four at bat with two singles while Ms. Wood went two for five with one single and one double.

Brittany Baker had one single and went one for five while Jessica Smith went one for six.

April Keene had a two-hitter in nine innings on the mound.
Traci Bridgers allowed one hit in three innings.

The Lady Bulldogs, 5-4 overall and 2-0 in the conference, will travel to Spring Creek High School on Friday, April 18 at 7 p.m.
