Tornado touchdown

23 April 2008 — A tornado reportedly touched down in Wayne County north of Goldsboro last Saturday afternoon, stripping the roof off a family’s double-wide trailer and blowing one mobile home into another across the road.

A family of three lives in the trailer at 285 Princeton Road in the Oakland community near the Johnston County line, authorities said. They lost their roof at 3:30 p.m., about the time a Wilson County Sheriff’s deputy traveling south on Interstate 795 reported the tornado on the ground a few miles east between Pikeville and Goldsboro.

“The people were home, but they got in the closet when the storm came through,” said David Lassiter, assistant chief with the Oakland Fire Department. “They were not hurt.”

The local chapter of the American Red Cross was on the scene Saturday evening, helping the family to find a place to stay. In a light rain, volunteer firefighters were loading their belongings into a tractor-trailer to protect them.

Lassiter said across the road the wind also blew a vacant single-wide trailer into a nearby double-wide, knocking it off its blocks. Neither was occupied at the time, he said.

Authorities also reported fallen trees and power lines throughout Wayne County.
