Fledgling soccer team performs well

By Hope Toler Dougherty

30 April 2008 — The Princeton High School girls soccer team is enjoying a great start this season. The young program started three years ago thanks to Athletic Director Al Musgrave, Principal Kirk Denning, and Coach Tim Besel. Princeton has won seven games out of ten. At its first game, Princeton stunned South Johnston 3-0 with juniors Morgan Brush and Meagan Hewett scoring. Then Princeton beat Tarboro 4-0 with juniors Olivia Booker, Morgan Brush, and Anna Dougherty scoring. On April 2, Princeton surprised C.B. Aycock 1-0 at Aycock's field with Morgan Brush scoring. The girls tied Aycock 0-0 in a rematch on April 9.

The team has been dominating conference play as well, with two wins against North Johnston, 3-2 and 2-1, and another against Spring Creek, 7-0. Other scorers include freshman Hattie Dougherty with assists from her sister Anna, and Megan Denning with a header at the North Johnston game. The two losses have been to Franklinton and Eastern Wayne. Freshman Amber Brush has been a solid presence at goal.

Since its inception four seasons ago, the Princeton girls soccer program has steadily grown from 12 girls on the first middle school team, to a solid presence at the school. This year, 16 girls play for the middle school team, 15 are on the junior varsity team, and 15 play for varsity. Last fall, the enthusiasm for soccer spread, and Princeton started a boys middle school program with 14 boys playing.

If you want to see an exciting game including spectacular kicks, a few somersaults, last minutes saves at the goal, and maybe even a yellow card or two, come out and support the girls soccer program at home against Rosewood on May 2.
