Barring a miracle in the last days of the regular season, a conference championship isn't in the cards for the 2013-14 Princeton girls basketball team. Still, the Lady Dawgs have had an impressive year after getting off to a slow start during the holiday season.

A scheduled Tuesday night home game with Lakewood was postponed due to winter weather, but prior to that, Princeton ran off three victories in a week, charging into second place in the Carolina Conference at 10-2 (13-8 overall) and increasing its winning streak to five in a row and nine wins in its last 10 games.

The run began last Thursday night, when the Lady Dawgs traveled to Lakewood, one of the better teams in the conference. This game was a defensive struggle in which Princeton was able to keep the Lady Leopards under control for most of the night, but couldn't pull away on the scoreboard. After building a 21-14 halftime lead, the teams swapped scores in the second half until the Lady Dawgs were forced to make free throws at the end to win 45-39.

Princeton's inside game made a big difference, with Savanna Massengill scoring 15 points and grabbing seven rebounds, and Tori Paul scoring 13 and pulling down nine boards. Charley Cox added eight points and Jackie Farrior five.

Princeton moved on to face an overmatched North Duplin team the next night.

The Lady Dawgs busted the game open with a big run in the second quarter and held a commanding 31-9 lead at the break. The Lady Rebels did better in the second half, in which each team scored 20 points, but never came close to getting back into the game.

Massengill dominated inside, with 19 points and nine rebounds. She was fouled several times by the smaller Lady Rebels and converted all 11 free-throw opportunities.

Cox added 10 points and Paul six.

Monday night saw Princeton making up a game at Hobbton, and that produced another easy win for the Lady Dawgs, 51-26.

Cox led the team with 13 points. Massengill had 10 points and nine rebounds, and Farrior scored six points.

The Lakewood game was originally scheduled to be made up Thursday night, but will now have to be played at a later date to be announced. As of now, Princeton was scheduled to end its regular season with Senior Night on Friday night against Rosewood. If Princeton beats Lakewood and upsets Rosewood, it could still win a share of the league title if Rosewood also lost at home to Lakewood in its final regular-season game on Saturday.
